Baker Island, Year 2

We planned another camping weekend at Baker Island with Garth and Ellen and the kids.  This is a great spot for camping and having another family around makes it even more fun.  I wasn't as on top of it with pictures this year, but I still got a few good ones.

Both families packed a little more tightly this time.  We could also rent a canoe at the park, since the water level was more reasonable than last year.  Moving all of our gear was a much simpler task this time, and was made even more efficient because we could canoe right up to our campsite.

We spent Saturday setting up camp and hanging out at the campsite.  It was a lot of fun for the adults to watch the kids (particularly Jonah) try the slack line.  Jonah tried over, and over, and over - and had some pretty spectacular wipe outs.  The plan for dinner Saturday night was to have bbq chicken breasts and wings.  Garth spent a long time getting the chicken started and decided to lower the grate for the last little bit of cooking.  That didn't work out quite as he planned, and the chicken all ended up dumped in the charcoal and ashes.  Garth was ready to toss it and have hot dogs, but we managed to pull most of the chicken out and give it a thorough rinse before cooking it the rest of the way.  It will be a while before he lives down the charcoal chicken delicacy.

On Sunday morning, we drove the bikes about 11 miles down the New River Trail and then biked back.  The older kids took off with Ellen's brother.  Ellen and I stayed with Brady and Kate, and James and Garth were with Mary Emma and Rudy at the back.  Apparently, Rudy had a hard go of it and poor James was left to encourage him along.  Thankfully, Rudy recovered enough energy to be positive on the canoe trip after lunch.  We had four canoes and two tubes.  The tubes ended up being A LOT of work, since the current wasn't strong enough to push them along at the same speed as the boats.  We had to tie them to a canoe, but only had one rope.  Two tubes full of kids works as a pretty effective brake!  Garth and Ellen had the first half of the trip and James and I took the second bit.  Exhausting!
